Pink October – Breast Cancer Awareness
According to an article published in Express tribune on January 22nd, 2011, the death toll in Pakistan of woman with breast cancer is around 40,000 per year, and the cases amount to almost 90,000 annually, which is a huge number in itself, but I am quite sure the numbers exceed the stated figures since every case is not documented. A lot of NGO’s are working on Breast Cancer awareness in Pakistan, however women are still afraid to talk about it, and it’s still considered a taboo in many parts of the country. Why?
Maybe we are not talking about it as much as we should. For example, I did not know that men can also be a victim of breast cancer, it’s just that it is more likely for women to have breast cancer. Every year, in October, breast cancer awareness campaigns are organized, for example the Fujifilm global campaign for breast cancer. It is sad to see though, that some people take it as a joke and send around spam messages on Facebook which ask girls to setup statuses according to a code, which turns out to be something like “I’m 14 weeks and craving Dairy Milk!!” giving these insensitive beings a chance to get a good laugh. Its shameful. We know facebook is cool, but why not use it to fight off a disease and spread awareness then spreading spam messages which don’t help. At all.
So this october, wear Pink. Wear pink and show you are willing to do something about Breast cancer. If you feel strongly about spreading awareness, upload profile pictures wearing pink with small messages that help spread awareness. Lets break the barriers of speech and make it okay for everyone to talk about it. Be a part of Pinktober 🙂
